Eric and Chris DeBerry, owners of Spring Hill’s DeBerry Insurance Agency, have been recognized as the recipients of the Daughters of the American Revolution Community Service Award by the Brigadier General Richard Winn Chapter.
Vicki James, Chapter Regent, presented the award to the two local businesses owners.
“Our chapter is thrilled to be presenting the Community Service Award to this community-oriented couple that has contributed to our local community by organizing and/or participating in many community activities,” said James. “They so freely give of themselves for the benefit of others.”
She said the DAR is dedicated to recognizing local citizens for their dedication and contributions to their community.
The DAR Community Service Award was established by the organization to honors exemplary voluntary achievements in cultural, educational, humanitarian, patriotic, historical, and citizenship endeavors, or in environmental conservation.
Although the award is presented locally, it is a DAR National award, approved and sent from the DAR national headquarters in Washington, DC.
“We are truly honored to receive this award,” said Chris DeBerry. “When we founded our agency in 2003, we made it a priority to support our community through our personal involvement and give-back efforts. We are humbled to receive this recognition.”
The DeBerrys have a reputation for supporting the local community in many ways sponsoring community and school sports teams and supporting teachers and local police and fire departments.
They are also longtime members of the Spring Hill Chamber of Commerce and the two have served as chamber board members.
In 2006, Chris DeBerry coordinated the chamber’s first business expo, which has continued as an annual event. Eric was recently appointed to serve a second term as a board member.
The DeBerrys founded the Spring Hill Country Ham Festival in 2004. They coordinated the event for many years forging a grassroots effort to grow the festival into a regional attraction and even working with the Tennessee State Legislature to declare the first Saturday in October the official Country Ham Day in the State of Tennessee.
They then stepped back from coordinating the festival in 2010 and turned it over to the title sponsor to continue operations.
Nine years later, the Spring Hill Country Ham Festival was revitalized and rebranded as The Whole Hog Festival to serve as the primary fundraiser for the local food pantry The Well Outreach.
The DeBerrys are also supporters of Snooty Giggles Dog Rescue, in neighboring Thompson Station.
The agency was recently recognized as a national “Change Agent” for their work with Snooty Giggles by Safeco Insurance and won $2,000 to donate to the rescue.
Each year, the DeBerrys host a Free Shred Day for the community. To date, the agency has collected nearly ten tons of paper for recycling through the event, saving hundreds of trees from being used to make paper. The secure shredding service also helps to prevent identity fraud by ensuring identifying papers are securely discarded.
Although the 2020 event was cancelled, the DeBerrys have begun planning for their next Free Shred Day event set to be held in April of 2021.
The DeBerrys have incorporated a food drive for The Well Outreach into their Free Shred Day and have collected several hundred pounds of food for those in need.
During the COVID-19 crisis, the DeBerrys continued to find ways to give back locally.
In May, the agency partnered with one of their carriers, Erie Insurance Agency, to purchase $1,000 in gift cards from locally owned restaurant Delta Bound and donate them to The Well Outreach.
They also partnered with Chubb Insurance to purchase $1,000 in gift cards from locally owned Jack of Hearts BBQ and donate them to the EMS team at Maury Regional Hospital and to the team at TriStar ER in Spring Hill.
“Our commitment to giving back to our community has never wavered during this challenging year,” said Eric DeBerry. “In fact, we are more dedicated than ever to supporting our community and other locally owned businesses. We are very honored to receive this award and are looking forward to many great opportunities to continue giving back in the years ahead.”
